🌟 We are celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) by taking a deeper dive in the specific health needs of women, focussing on preventative healthcare and health promotion 🌟
Women’s health encompasses distinct physiological and hormonal differences across the lifespan, which significantly influence nutritional requirements. These needs necessitate tailored nutritional inputs not only to prevent nutritional deficiencies but also to foster health and mitigate the risk of chronic diseases.
When it comes to dietary recommendations, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, I advocate for a balanced intake of high-quality foods, including unrefined, minimally processed options such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, healthy fats, and sources of protein. Coupled with regular exercise and limited intake of low-quality, highly-processed foods, this will generally cover off most requirements for energy and nutrition.
Regarding supplements, it’s a topic that often sparks debate. However, it’s evident that women should consider certain key additions to their diet to ensure they meet their nutritional needs throughout life’s various stages.
- Calcium and Vitamin D – Essential for lifelong bone health, particularly during adolescence and menopause. Deficiency can increase the risk of osteoporosis. Dairy-based products provide calcium, while vitamin D synthesis requires sunlight exposure
- Iron – Vital, especially for women experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding, to prevent iron deficiency and anaemia. Dietary sources and supplements can help replenish iron levels
- Folate – Crucial during early pregnancy and breastfeeding to support fetal development and prevent neural tube defects
Women also face unique health considerations that deserve attention. From reproductive health to hormonal fluctuations and the physiological changes of menopause, understanding and addressing these factors are paramount for overall wellbeing. As a GP and organisational health expert, my aim is to provide evidence-based guidance and support to empower women in making informed decisions about their dietary choices and overall health. By addressing individual needs and considering the latest research, women can optimize their nutritional intake and lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.
